I've heard so much praise for this manga, even from non-sports fans, and this initial volume does seem quite promising。 Unlike many sports tales, it doesn't begin with a determined protagonist aiming to realize athletic dreams, but rather a belligerent hothead who never bothered to learn the basic rules of a sport he actively dislikes。 He has the hots for a basketball fan and is gradually drawn in, but even the "lovestruck suitor" trope is more nuanced than many sports tales。 There's plenty of g I've heard so much praise for this manga, even from non-sports fans, and this initial volume does seem quite promising。 Unlike many sports tales, it doesn't begin with a determined protagonist aiming to realize athletic dreams, but rather a belligerent hothead who never bothered to learn the basic rules of a sport he actively dislikes。 He has the hots for a basketball fan and is gradually drawn in, but even the "lovestruck suitor" trope is more nuanced than many sports tales。 There's plenty of goofy humor, and the basketball action (so far fairly unorthodox as our hero has yet to actually learn any rules of the game) is expertly articulated through the artwork。 。。。more

The male characters consists of immature students who are egotistical, easily threatened, and tends to break into a fight when stepped on。 There are many cliche scenes that probably appeal to teens who are going through similar life stages as the main characters。 I wonder if the plot and characters would develop into something beyond what I see in this first volume。 Would love to see more character growth and depth in the story line。

Very obvious why teenage boys love this series

This was absolutely hilarious。 Hanamichi Sakuragi is one of the funniest characters I have come across in a long time and I can’t wait to see him further as I carry on with this series。The art here is absolutely remarkable and the pacing was fantastic too。 There is a tropey note this volume ends on but given this is shōnen I can’t begrudge it too much。

Read in Japanese。I watched The First Slam Dunk and found I really enjoyed it, so I picked up the manga。 I don’t even play basketball but I ended up liking the story! The manga is super boyish, funny, and lighthearted。 I love himbos so of course I like following Sakuragi as a character。 Since I watched the movie first I’m looking forward to seeing Ryouta’s entrance。Sakuragi’s friends we’re also really sweet。 I liked that they always had his back。I could’ve done without the panty shot in the beginn Read in Japanese。I watched The First Slam Dunk and found I really enjoyed it, so I picked up the manga。 I don’t even play basketball but I ended up liking the story! The manga is super boyish, funny, and lighthearted。 I love himbos so of course I like following Sakuragi as a character。 Since I watched the movie first I’m looking forward to seeing Ryouta’s entrance。Sakuragi’s friends we’re also really sweet。 I liked that they always had his back。I could’ve done without the panty shot in the beginning, but we got some man ass in there too, so gender equality? I remember reading this out of order as a kid in the shonen jump magazines and I finally found volume one so I could start from the beginning! It's very interesting to see where he started versus where he is when I started reading from the middle of the series and I'm excited to see his growth from hot headed delinquent to the basketball star I remember reading about。 Five stars and the art is very beautiful on the inside cover pages! Buenas buenas, hello there!

Haikyuu is still better, but it's still better than most sports books。 The transition from not liking playing basketball to loving it is done far more convincing than Haikyuu。 However, the supporting cast is way worse。 The book may have set the standards, I don't know, but I still find it funny that two supporting characters are just straight up replaced so the author doesn't have to put effort into team development。 The themes are good, but I find the presentation of themes through teams in Hai Haikyuu is still better, but it's still better than most sports books。 The transition from not liking playing basketball to loving it is done far more convincing than Haikyuu。 However, the supporting cast is way worse。 The book may have set the standards, I don't know, but I still find it funny that two supporting characters are just straight up replaced so the author doesn't have to put effort into team development。 The themes are good, but I find the presentation of themes through teams in Haikyuu far more interesting。 It's still really good, despite all I've said。 。。。more
